Find Your Career at GT Independence
Work With a Company That Sees You as You
GT Independence began because the Carmichael family wanted their own family with disabilities to live their best life. To make this happen, the family looked into alternatives to group homes and nursing homes. And they found self-direction—where people with disabilities or long-term needs can choose how and where to receive support and who delivers that support. Sometimes this can even be friends and family.
The Carmichael family decided to share their knowledge so that others could live the life of their choosing, too. GT is proud to be disability-owned, with over 10% of our employees also living and working with disabilities.
Much More Than Just Financial Management Services
GT is officially a financial management services company, but we are much more. We’re advocates for self-direction and its vital role in building trusted communities of care and support.
From our small-town start in 2004, GT has become a company supporting over 25,000 people nationwide. Family-owned, GT has more than 500 employees and a presence in 18 states (and counting). Since 2018, GT has grown at an average annual rate of 21%, and the opportunities for career development have grown with us.
We are proud to be ranked among the Best and Brightest Companies to Work For. We invite you to explore what it means to be part of the GT family—for you and for the people we serve.
Beyond the Perks: What It’s Like Working at GT
Working at GT is unlike working anywhere else. It’s a little like coming home. The Carmichael family’s commitment to making self-direction an accessible option for individuals and families is woven into the fabric of GT. We are a company that believes in integrity, rewards respect, and delivers excellence at every level. We are committed to making a difference in our communities. All of that starts and ends with people.
GT is a person-centered workplace. Whether we are serving our customers, our communities, or each other, we live our mission every day: To help people live a life of their choosing regardless of age or ability.
Plus, we’re certified as a Great Place to Work! 92% of our employees said they feel good about the ways we contribute to the community. You can read more about our certification here.

Work From Home or the Office
Today, much of our workforce telecommutes, providing a high level of service to our customers regardless of our physical location. The telecommuting option continues to be available for many positions. As a result, employees have greater flexibility and can remain safe at home if needed.
The pandemic has changed how many people live and work, including those of us at GT. People who use self-direction depend on uninterrupted care and support. We need to be there for them no matter what.
-
Access the Technology You Need
Our goal is to make life easier for everyone we serve—and this includes our employees. We invest in tools, resources, and technology to make sure all our employees are well-equipped for every day on the job.
-
Position Yourself for Success
Just as we want to see success among people choosing self-direction, we want to see success among people choosing GT as their employer. Along with competitive pay and benefits, GT provides universal access to a CARES Success Coach. This coach can offer guidance on career growth and development, as well as help in other areas of life so everyone experiences better outcomes.
GT also offers comprehensive training resources. Our knowledge library includes more than 400 training materials in a variety of formats. This allows our employees to learn in ways that are most effective for them.
-
Speak Up and Feel Heard
We encourage our employees to help us shape our company. We create many opportunities for employees to speak up, share their feedback, and make an impact. We conduct annual surveys and interviews, and employees can serve on committees and take part in meaningful conversations.
We also deliver on our open-door policy. From our CEO on down, we encourage open conversation and believe that every member of the GT family has a direct impact on our success as a team.

Take Time to Nurture Your Community
GT is proud to be part of the Sturgis, Michigan, community. We seek ways to take care of those around us, from donating resources for urgent needs to supporting organizations that focus on lifting people up.
But with a workforce that spans the nation, we know our family and community extend beyond our backyard. That’s why we give all our employees paid time off to volunteer with organizations that are close to them.
